WOONSOCKET--In an era where people just don't seem to care about anyone anymore. Derek McCoy from Holsum Bakery may be the exception to that rule. McCoy is being dubbed a hero after he fought off a thief and retrieved an elderly womans stolen purse earlier this week. Maria T. Gonzalez of Summer St, Woonsocket, stated that she took out a large amount of money from the Dean Bank in Blackstone, MA in order to pay off her medical bills. She then went for a coffee at a Li'l General Convenience Store located at 604 Winter St, Woonsocket. After purchasing her items, Gonzalez then exited the store only to be tackled to the ground. Meanwhile, McCoy was performing a daily delivery at Li'l General when he heard a cry for help. "I saw him knock her to the ground and he started taking off on foot with her purse. I just jumped out of my truck and took off after him." McCoy said. After a few blocks of giving chase, McCoy got close enough to the thief and tackled him to the ground. A brief fist fight was ensued but McCoy was emerged victorious with a few cuts to the face and hands. After the thief ran off, McCoy made his way back to Gonzalez with her purse that still held her belongings. McCoy was offered a One Thousand Dollar reward by the family, which he refused. He said he pleaded with Gonzalez to call the police, but she was too afraid to go ahead with it. She just wanted to go home. "It just pissed me off to see that happening," McCoy said. How could you do that to any elderly woman? Maria Gonzalez, wrote a letter informing The Woonsocket Call about McCoy's courageous act.
I believe this man Derek is an angel to put his life in danger for a perfect stranger," Maria wrote. Woonsocket has an angel. Thank you Derek from Holsum Bakery" MCCOYDISTRIBUTION@COX.NET ® HOLSUM, Star Logo Federally Registered Trademarks of The Long Company. |
